What you need to do before a Mammogram and how to prepare for the test
- You will need a referral from your doctor
- Mammograms require an appointment
- At the time of booking your appointment you will be advised not to wear talcum powder or deodorant on the day of your test
- If you suffer from breast sensitivity with your menstrual period, where possible avoid making your appointment in these times
- If you are breast feeding, express or feed prior to your examination. You may wish to discard the next feed
- Continue to take your medications
- Bring all previous relevant X-rays or scans to your appointment
What will happen when you have your Mammography done
- You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding previous surgery, breast implants, family history and other facts relevant to the examination
- You will be asked to change into a gown
- The radiographer will place an ergonomic flex paddle that shapes to the breast for better comfort and will apply even compression to your breast
- You may be asked to have additional imaging following assessment of your initial mammogram pictures
Your report and images
- After your examination you will be given a copy of the films from your study
- A report will either be sent back to your referring doctor or you may be asked to return to collect them once they have been reported by one of our radiologists
- Digital copies of all studies are stored on our PACS (Picture Archiving & Communication System) for comparison with any future mammography examinations
